The article aims to contribute to an assessment on the possible directions for research and the production of knowledge in the social sciences in Latin America. Focuses on one subject in the field of research-the social participation of individuals in groups, organizedsocial collectives, and social movements. What main lines of research have been designed regarding these issues by Latin American researchers? What methodologies have been used? What are the theoretical-methodological brackets that configure the approaches on social movements? What challenges researchers have faced? What challenges are foreseenfor the future?
