Resumen

BERNASCONI, Oriana. Introducing morality in social studies of selfhood: biographical narratives as moral work upon the self. Polis [online]. 2015, vol.14, n.41, pp.305-326. ISSN 0718-6568.  http://dx.doi.org/10.4067/S0718-65682015000200020.

This article aims at enriching the field of social studies of selfhood. Under the premise that prevailing views of the self as mere self-awareness are incomplete, I draw on philosophical and narrative theories to propose an interpretative research program that associates the study of selfhood with that of morality. Bringing Charles Taylor’s proposal to the ground of empirical social research, I understand the self as a reflexive project organized around ideas of the good and the good life. Although in everyday life these moral orientations remain largely implicit, they do unfold in biographical narrative practices: the construction of life stories, testimonies and autobiographies provides indications of the kind of person the narrator wants to be and the effects those moral options have over his or her life and identity. Thus, I propose to approach biographical narratives as practices of moral articulation and management of the self.

Palabras clave : self; morality; narratives; biographical work; moral agency; Taylor.
