Resumen
GUTIERREZ CROCCO, Francisca. Trade unions without associates?: Ideologies of trade union representativeness in Chile. Polis [online]. 2016, vol.15, n.43, pp.533-555. ISSN 0718-6568. http://dx.doi.org/10.4067/S0718-65682016000100025.
Since the 1970s, union density has declined in various occidental societies, including Chile. The aim of this paper is twofold: first, to show the weak reaction of authorities, trade unions, and scholarship to this tendency in Chile. Second, to identify what I refer to as the “ideologies of representativeness” that explain the indifference of Chilean trade unions to the decline on their density. Based on in-depth interviews conducted with union leaders, I distinguish between three ideologies: “neo- revolutionary”, “political- pragmatic” and “neoliberal”. I argue that given that the first one dominates in the main national trade union confederation, the question about how to reinforce unionization has been marginal in the country’s public debate.
