RAMOS RODRIGUEZ, Romina y OVANDO SANTANA, Cristian. The Tarapacá region: border security and multiple appropriations of its space. Polis [online]. 2016, vol.15, n.44, pp.57-81. ISSN 0718-6568. http://dx.doi.org/10.4067/S0718-65682016000200004.
Since the spatial shift in social sciences, Chile’s northern border is determined between methodological nationalism, which involves thinking about the border territory under security exercised by the State and, at the same time, by local population that appropriates the space according to the way they inhabit it. This multiple expression is also manifested in the fact that the sub-national governmental entities, that should guarantee sovereignty on behalf of the central authority, suffer a sense of abandonment, relegation and marginalization produced by the action of the state itself. Indeed through fieldwork, we can conclude that State’s functionaries are determined to guarantee the security of the territory, although under marginal conditions that lead to the appropriation of the space according to the opportunities offered by the complex context. However, we conjecture that these officials and residents maintain coping survival mechanisms that sometimes contradict the national devices that regulate them.
