Resumen
CARO MOLINA, Pamela. The social place of old age in rural territories of Aconcagua, a gender analysis. Polis [online]. 2017, vol.16, n.48, pp.201-221. ISSN 0718-6568. http://dx.doi.org/10.4067/S0718-65682017000300201.
This article analyzes the current social constructions of the old age of men and women over 65 years old, from rural territories such as the Aconcagua Valley, in the context of demographic, productive and social transformations that occurred in the last decades. We use a qualitative methodology, based on the analysis of 33 in-depth interviews. The results reveal gender differences both in the meanings and current experiences of old age, as well as in the traits and social place that they occupy. Men focus their identities on participation in productive work and organizations of protection and care of water and the valley, an aspect that coexists with the perception of frustration and greater fragility in front of physical deterioration, while for women a central prevailing focus is in domestic work and care for others, as well as participation in social groups, but this time oriented to the recreation and self-care of the body.
