The right to religious freedom established in the Dignitatis humana statement of the Second Vatican Council was subject to a controversial preparation, herein analyzed based on a direct reading of the sources. The historical controversy had a significant consequence on the philosophical-juridical scope: the establishment of a new approach to the rhetoric of modern freedoms, which over time gave rise to different interpretations. This, however, has meant a heavy burden for the classic meaning of Christian public law.
