This article analyses, from the philosophical basis to its limits, the way in which the theoretical propositions of Thomas Hobbes, John Locke and Jean-Jacques Rousseau about the social contract function have been deeply connected to the notion of national sovereignty. To do so, and based on the forms of State and Government preferred by each of the three authors studied, the state of nature, the conception of man, the process of forming a social contract and the condition of mankind within the State are studied. The conclusion attempts to reconstruct the genesis of the most important characteristics of national sovereignty.
