Abstract A peat bog complex is studied (locally named "campaña") in the summit of the Cordillera de Piuché in Dalcahue Commune, on the Chiloé Island, Chile, corresponding to an outpost of the Magellanic tundra. We worked with 54 vegetation samples using a phytosociological methodology. The initial table was ordered in the traditional way to differentiate plant associations (communities) and sorted and classified with multivariate statistics to know the ecological differentiation of vegetation samples and site requirements of the species. The systematic and biological spectra of the native and endemic species were poorly differentiated with most of them belonging to Monocotyledons and Dicotyledons and with only perennial and pulvinate chamaephytes. Three plant associations Donatio-Oreobuletum obtusangulae, Drosero-Donatietum fascularis and Chusqueo-Schoenetum antarcticae were differentiated, being the first and the last unknown to science. According to the ISA analysis the first two communities had only an associated species, Oreobolus obtusangulus and Tapeinia pumila respectively, but the last presented 4 associated species: Schoenus antarcticus, Baccharis patagónica, Chusquea montana and Berberis serratodentata. The plant species were arranged in gradients of organic matter (oligotrophy) and soil moisture (drainage). High floristic similarities among the three peatlands were detected. Results are discussed and a Syntaxonomical location of the investigated plant associations is proposed, raising possible conservation problems by altering biotopes and introduction of invasive plants.
