LATORRE, Elvira; PLAZA, María Teresa  and  LOPEZ, Patricio. Metallic animals: Prehispanic earrings of the semiarid north OF Chile as zoomorphic representations. Bol. Mus. Chil. Arte Precolomb. [online]. 2018, vol.23, n.2, pp.99-120. ISSN 0718-6894.

This article presents the results of a visual pattern analysis con ducted on 112 pre-Hispanic metal earrings from the semiarid north of Chile. Four minimal elements of design were identified, organized according to a set of predetermined rules, resulting in a limited number of combinations. Four of those combinations could be read as zoomorphic representations, and so a new classification is proposed, based on the organizational patterns identified. Through observations of the geographic and chronological distribution of the earrings, some trends were identified that could be discussed in light of new findings.

Keywords : semi-arid north; pre-Hispanic; metal; earrings; zoomorphic representations.
