The present article exposes the circumstances in which an abrupt change in the succession which took place during the reign of Andronikos II Palaiologos (1282-1328), who in the year 1321, after the decease of his eldest son and heir Michael IX (1320), excluded from the imperial succession the latter's son, Andronikos III, putting in his place his second son, Constantine, and above all the latter's bastard, Michael Katharos, a situation that would be the preamble to the First Civil War between the Palaiologoi.
