JIMENEZ PALACIOS, Ricardo. Informal Commerce in Border Cities. Case Study of Clothing and Footwear traders in the city of Tacna - Peru. Si Somos Americanos [online]. 2019, vol.19, n.1, pp.13-42. ISSN 0719-0948. http://dx.doi.org/10.4067/S0719-09482019000100013.
The unique processes that in border cities such as exchange rates, productive dynamics and service subsidies are an important factor for cross-border socioeconomic linkages. Chile permits the importation of secondhand clothing and footwear in its norther regions, but such commerce is prohibited in Peru. This situation has led to the creation of the Secondhand Clothing and Footwear Market in the border city of Tacna (Peru), which has become an important development hub at the local level. This article presents a quantitative study of this activity that addresses the social and economic realities and prejudices or pre- conceptions of this group of traders.
