Resumen

GAVIRA MARQUEZ, María Concepción. POTOSÍ’S MINES ACADEMY. THE SHORT TRAYECTORY A MINING INSTITUTION, 1779-1782. Diálogo Andino [online]. 2019, n.58, pp.23-41. ISSN 0719-2681.  http://dx.doi.org/10.4067/S0719-26812019000100023.

This work addresses the founding of Potosí’s Mines Academy in 1779 by Governor Jorge Escobedo and analyzes its characteristics and conditions in order to evaluate the impact it had on the mining and society of Potosí. Unlike the importance and transcendence of the Real Seminario de Minería Novohispano, the Academy of Potosí had short life and consequently low impact. It seems important to us compare the two institutions, both dedicated to instruct and educate young miners, analyze their particularities and consider the reasons why one was successful while the other was a failed project. We have annexed the Ordinances of the Academy created by Governor Escobedo in order to be able to analyze and make known what we consider a weakness of this institution, its program and internal structure, especially if we compare it with the Neohispanic case.

Palabras clave : Colonial mining; mining institutions; Potosí.
