MEZA, Paulina. The Strategic Positioning of the Author in Research Articles: an empirically grounded model. Logos [online]. 2017, vol.27, n.1, pp.152-164. ISSN 0716-7520.  http://dx.doi.org/10.15443/rl2711.

The traditional characterization of the research article as a specialized text in which results are communicated in a neutral, precise and economic language does not account for the fact that writing and publishing a research manuscript is always a strategic and persuasive action. In this work, we present an empirically grounded model for the analysis of the strategic positioning of the author in research articles, emphasizing the persuasive character of this genre. Our proposal was based on an inductive-deductive research in which we analyzed 182 articles from 5 science fields and written in 2010-2014 by authors with different levels of experience. The model was successfully validated at different stages and by Chilean and international experts. The strategic positioning of the author requires at least one of the general discursive functions: positive appraisal of one’s work and negative appraisal of other’s work. These two macro-functions are crystalized in three types of strategies which are reflected in three symbolic spaces underlying the scientific activity: knowledge, authors, and the text. Our proposal has the strength of being empirically grounded and having a high potential for scientific literacy.
