Improving the editorial management: A new editorial panel

Our journal Biological Research currently has an ISI Impact Factor of 1.14. While this is lower than it was in 2004 (2.173), it nevertheless remains significant, evidencing that our journal is one of the scientific publications from Latin America in the area of biology with the greatest impact at the international level.

With the aim of improving the editorial management of the Journal in order to recuperate and even surpass the past Impact Factor figure, the Board of Directors of the Biological Society of the Chile has opted to continue introducing changes in the editorial management of the Journal.

These changes involve the editorial panel and the editorial management of manuscripts.

A) At the level of the Editorial Panel: The Biological Society of Chile has confirmed Dr. Manual J. Santos, of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, as Editor in Chief of the Journal, as of 2009. The panel of Associate Editors has been increased to cover the editorial management of manuscripts sent for publication that address different areas of Biology. In addition to the current Associate Editors, Dr. Christian González, of the Universidad de Chile, and Dr. Ricardo Moreno of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, we have incorporated Dr. Rodrigo Gutierrez of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, Dr. Rosanna Ginocchio of the Mining and Metallurgy Research Center, Dr. Rosalba Lagos of the Universidad de Chile and Dr. Victoria Velarde of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile.

As well, we have incorporated the following experienced scientists whose names were recommended by Societies affiliated to the Biological Society of Chile: Dr. Néstor Bianchi, Multidisciplinary Institute of Cellular Biology, Argentina; Dr. Francisco Bozinovic, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, Chile; Dr. Inés Contreras, Universidad de Chile, Chile; Dr. Raúl Fernández Donoso, Universidad de Chile, Chile; Dr. Gonzalo Gajardo, Universidad de Los Lagos, Chile; Dr. Luis Felipe Hinojosa, Universidad de Chile, Chile; Dr. Tsuneo Imanaka, Toyama University, Japan; Dr. Sergio Lavandero, Universidad de Chile, Chile; Dr. Lisette Leyton, Universidad de Chile, Chile; Dr. Gloria Riquelme, Universidad de Chile, Chile; Dr. José Luis Santos, Universidad de Chile, Chile; Dr. Flavio Salazar O., Universidad de Chile, Chile; Dr. Eugenio Spencer, Universidad de Santiago de Chile, Chile; Dr. Carlos Valenzuela, Universidad de Chile, Chile.

B) At the level of editorial management: Beginning this year, 2010, the sending, evaluation and handling of all information related to manuscripts will be managed electronically through our website.

We expect that the aforementioned measures will improve the editorial management of manuscripts and that this will lead to an improvement in the indices of international impact of our Journal. Nevertheless, the success of these initiatives to optimize the editorial work of Biological Research will undoubtedly depend on the quality of the scientific articles that are published. And this in turn will be a result of Chilean and international researchers choosing this journal as a priority to publish their results.
