Una doble argumentación en favor de la definición utópica de América:
"El presagio de América" de Alfonso Reyes

In this article, we focus on Alfonso Reyes' essay "El presagio de América", paying special attention to the standpoint of the Mexican essayist in the historical debate about the Discovery of America. We will conclude from the results of our rhetorical analysis that Reyes defends the utopian identity of the New World. Schematically, his argumentation can be reduced to two rhetoric systems (transitivity and reciprocity) as Perelman describes them. Nevertheless, several textual strategies hide the rigidity and firm orientation of Reyes' reasoning.

La condena perpetua: el mito del héroe en
tres relatos de la literatura latinoamericana

This work consists of a siege into three latinoamerican literature stories ­El sueño de los héroes by Bioy Casares, "El último rostro" by Alvaro Mutis and El general en su laberinto by Gabriel García Márquez­, where the hero's Myth is updated. We focus on percieving the process of heroic figure construction and how this figure is moving from places asigned by the epic to suggestive zones which critically (re)strengthen the hero's Myth.

The heuristic potential of poetry is approached through a reading of Jorge Luis Borges' text "La luna" ["The moon"]. In this poem, Borges offers a very insightful, albeit implicit, view of language as a communicative and cultural system.

Based on the hypotheses that the characteristics of the discourse and the competence of the social agents that produce it maintain a relationship that we call of coherency, we analyze the metaphor of the family used by Bartolomé Mitre in the Historia de San Martín y de la emancipación sudamericana to represent the nation. In that respect, we sustain that this figure allows for a naturalization of the bonds among the citizens, as well as those with their homeland and with Spain, that makes it particularly acceptable and, for the same reasons, facilitating the imposition of a national model that the cultured elite constructs. The trope bocomes a way to set limits that define inclusions and exclusions: the family is made up of the sons of spaniards adapted to the environment, thus eliminating the indigenous as "inert matter", the spaniards for not being adapted, and the immigrants that constituted, at the time the text was written, a threat to the cultured elite that exerted the control and administrated the representations of the nation.

Poesía y oralidad

A paradoxical situation occurs in poetic discourse: to represent silence, "silent music" (internal feelings and sensations), it is necessariy to have recourse to a writing that, unlike other kinds of discourse, acts as a musical notation, as a material support of the "significant". Thus poetic writing, precisely due to its nature of writing, does not contain real sounds, melodies or rithms, which are part of actual oral sequence, but only the acoustic images that corresponde to distinctive segments.

The persistence of phonetic dimension maintains poetry as an occurrence that, in spite of the scriptural support, conserves its audible virtuality, so that the reader "hears in his mind, behind the written words shape, the words of the text, its verbal music" (O. Paz).

Dicotomías narrativas en "El árbol" de María Luisa Bombal

In this article I analyze how María Luisa Bombal reflects the condition of the Hispanic woman through her social and historical textualization. In all of her literary work, there exists a constant presence of nature that comes to symbolize her feminine character intimacy and their marginal situation. In "The Tree", the author presents a dichotomic structure that polarizes the narrative into two antagonistic, hierarchic, and different forces. And, the barrier that delimits them constitutes a border that separates these two irreconcilable worlds.

María Luisa Bombal reveals in this short story how the patriarchal system ignores the feminine subjectivity, and how this one achieves expression in the alienated withdrawal of nature.

La galaxia poética latinoamericana. 2a mitad del siglo XX

This article proposes a spatial metaphor of development in Latin American poetry: a galaxy that expands rapidly towards the limits.

It also analyzes the strongest centrifugal movements, represented by Residencia en la tierra by Neruda or Diario de muerte by Enrique Lihn. In general, it examines some exemplary decenterings of the poetry of the twentieth century as effected by the generation of the 1950's and the counterpart, the resistence to the attraction of the limits, that defines the following promotion, that of 1960.

Los santos inocentes como novela del devenir

The work I am presenting analyze Los santos inocentes from the concepts of fugue and becoming proposed by Gilles Deleuze. This novel by Delibes shows a world in movement with apparently conflicting groups; however, my reading consists in arguing that the novel is governed by the contact between heterogeneous realims. The characters of Los santos inocentes provoke alliances among multiple entities and, through them, it takes place a meeting that fuse their differences and deliver the characters.

La feria discursiva de Juan José Arreola

This paper is a reading of La feria, a Juan José Arreola's novel, as an eminently dialogic, heterogeneous, carnavalesque and fragmentary text that constructs meanings at the macrostructure's level.

The treatment of the themes involves the formal writing structure. For this reason it's such an interesting novel. The "feria" as a religious and pagan holiday is the principal subject of this novel; but the text is a fair too, a discursive fair that includes diverse material and spiritual spheres.

La vuelta al día en ochenta mundos: La teoría del camaleón

In the present work, Juiio Cortázar's La vuelta al día en ochenta mundos the "casilla del camaleón" is considered as the privileged place, where theory and practice combine.

The "casilla" is the place, or point of view, where the author places himself in the creative game: he goes trom one place to another, he goes forward or he goes back just to get to the "center" of the labyrinth.

The "camaleón", on its turn, becomes the emblematic or symbolic figure in the book because of its possibilities of transformation and change which are the characteristics linked with human existence and linked with the poetic creation of the author.
